Cultivate curiosity. Explore with us.

Beginning in the 2021-2022 school year, we started a fresh chapter in our history. Spearheaded by a coalition of parents, community members and teachers, the new HBS preserves the strengths of our past as a laboratory school while seizing opportunities for renewal as an independent school committed to nurturing curious young learners.

It's a great time to rediscover HBS.

Located in Providence, Rhode Island, on the tree-lined campus of Rhode Island College, HBS is a PK-5 school community that values learning through play and guided exploration. Students at HBS benefit from a personalized, interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to education. As an independent school, HBS will add to its robust curriculum with a larger focus on diversity, inclusion and community engagement.

Our student-centered curriculum is guided by experiential learning and the tenets of respect, responsibility and community. Small class sizes facilitate individualized learning and hands-on inquiry.

Community connections are deeply valued at HBS. We continually aspire to reflect the diversity of our city and state and to ensure all members of our school are valued, included, and treated equitably.

HBS values our legacy of excellence. Founded in 1898 as The Observation School of Rhode Island Normal School (later Rhode Island College), our school has always been dedicated to research-grounded teaching.
